Drums FAQs

Should I purchase a traditional drum set or go for electronic drums?

While the type of drum set purchased is a purely personal choice, electronic drums are often more expensive and specialized for experienced musicians. An electronic drum set requires much more equipment and accessories than a traditional set. As well, the options available on an electronic set are more complicated. Usually, these types of sets are used by experienced musicians who are looking to add some unique sounds and flavor to their music.

What's the difference between a bass drum and a double bass drum?

A bass drum is a standard part of the percussion section in any orchestra or band. It provides the deep bass beat. A double bass drum can be two drums together, are a drum with a double pedal, with each side worked independently of the other. Double bass drums are complicated to use and require a lot of coordination. These are mostly found in different types of jazz or heavy metal music.

What equipment might I need for a drum set?

A drum set usually includes several different drums, a stool and a drum rack to mount the drums. Beyond that, the most obvious accessory would be a set of drum sticks. Drummers often break drum sticks while playing because of the force sometimes needed to strike the drum, so having several replacement sets available is a good idea. There are pads that can be purchased to lie on top of the membrane of the drum and stifle the sound a bit while still allowing the drummer to practice. These are an excellent choice for drummers who will be playing in homes with other people that might not always appreciate the drumming sounds.
