Snare Drum
Snare drums are a very common part of the percussion section.
Most children who take percussion in the school band learn to drum on
snare drums. They are lightweight, easy to transport and easy to learn
basic drumming techniques on.
The snare drum is named for its construction. It has two membranes
stretched on either end of the shell of the drum. The top membrane is
the one that is struck with the hands or drum stick and the bottom membrane
is lined with snares that vibrate when the top is struck. The snare
sound is unique to this type of drum.
A snare drum can be made in different sizes. Most have a diameter of
15-16" and a depth of approximately 5". However, there are
smaller snare drums made to fit children's drum sets for those who are
learning to drum early in life.
