Drums
Drums are part of the percussion family of instruments.
They have been a ubiquitous part of music for thousands of years and
are of the most basic design and construction. Depending on the country
or style of origin, drums can be of varying shapes and sizes.
Drums all have a common assembly of a thin membrane stretched over
an opening. The size and shape of the opening will vary based on the
type of drum. Some drums are made of a cylindrical build (such as the
modern drum most commonly found in the western world), and others can
be made in shapes of bowls, or truncated cones.
All drums are generally struck to make their musical sounds. They can
be struck by parts of the body such has hands, fingers and feet, or
by objects like drum sticks. The drums will make different sounds depending
on the type of membrane that it is made from, as well as the size and
shape of the shell.
