Double Bass Drums
Double bass drums are used in many types of jazz, metal
and rock music. They require two bass drums, two bass drum pedals and
a lot of coordination from the drummer. Some modern setups go for a
single drum with a double pedal, which makes the cost lower and tune-up
easier.
Double bass drums were
initially dreamed up by famous jazz drummer Louie Bellson while he was
in high school. They began showing up regularly in music through the
40s and 50s, but became most popular in their use in rock music by such
bands as Cream, The Who and Pink Floyd. As music styles have continued
to develop over the years, these types of drums have been used extensively
in heavy and extreme metal music.
Double bass drums are not standard in drum sets. However, they can
be included and the drum kit designed around them if desired by the
drummer. It will increase the price of the drum set, but it will be
worth it if that's what is needed and desired.
