Bass Drum
The bass drum is usually the largest part of the percussion
group. It has three different classifications: the concert bass drum,
the kick drum and the pitched bass drum. A concert bass drum is most
often found in orchestral music, kick drums are part of drum sets usually
found in rock bands, and pitched bass drums are most commonly found
in marching bands and drum corps.
Bass drums can clearly be used in all manner of music. The low tones
produced by a bass drum are desired by just about every style of song
that is played in bands and orchestras.
A bass drum that is designed for marching band use is also designed
to be carried, despite its size. A percussionist who carries the bass
drum in a marching band or drum corps needs to be strong enough to stand
up straight and march long distances with the drum attached to his or
her back. It is important to make sure the drum is placed securely and
comfortably on the drummer.
